Plastic Box Section: Uses, Sizes & Buying Guide

29 Jun 2026

If you have ever needed a lightweight square tube for a frame, a cover, a spacer or a tidy way to run cables, you have probably searched for a plastic box section and found a confusing mix of names, sizes and materials. Some sellers call it square tube, others call it PVC box section or uPVC box section, and the sizes jump around with no clear guidance. This guide clears it up. We explain what a plastic box section actually is, what it is used for, which sizes to choose, how it compares to aluminium, and how to cut and fit it properly. By the end you will know exactly which profile suits your project and why it is such a useful, low-fuss material for both trade and DIY jobs.

What Is a Plastic Box Section?

A plastic box section is a hollow, square or rectangular tube made from rigid PVC. It has four straight sides and a hollow centre, which makes it strong for its weight, easy to handle and simple to cut on site.

Because it is extruded from external-grade rigid PVC, it holds its shape, resists moisture and shrugs off corrosion. It will not rust, rot or react with damp the way timber or untreated metal can, which is why it works equally well indoors and outdoors.

Is It the Same as a Plastic Square Tube?

Yes. "Plastic square tube", "square plastic tube" and "plastic box section" all describe the same thing: a hollow plastic profile with a square or rectangular cross-section. The name simply depends on the trade or supplier. If you are searching for a 50mm square plastic tube, you are looking for exactly the same profile we list as a 50x50mm box section.

PVC, uPVC or Plastic — What's the Difference?

In everyday searches, "plastic box section", "PVC box section" and "uPVC box section" are used interchangeably. uPVC stands for unplasticised PVC, the same rigid material used for window frames and external trims. For practical purposes, when you buy a rigid plastic box section you are buying a uPVC profile, and the three terms point to the same product.

What Is Plastic Box Section Used For?

The appeal of a plastic box section is its versatility. The hollow square shape is genuinely useful across dozens of jobs, from quick household fixes to repeatable fabrication runs.

Examples of how to use plastic box section profiles

Framing and Light Structural Work

Plastic box section is ideal for light framing where you want strength without weight. Think display stands, lightweight partitions, sign frames, screen surrounds and protective guards.

It is not a load-bearing structural material in the way steel is, so it should not carry heavy weight or support a building element. For light, non-load-bearing frames, though, it gives clean straight lines and a tidy finish.

Cable Protection and Conduit Covers

The hollow centre makes a plastic box section a neat way to route and protect cables. Run the cables through the tube and you get a clean, knock-resistant cover that hides the wires and keeps them tidy.

If you mainly want to manage surface cabling along a wall or skirting, a purpose-made trunking profile is often the better tool for the job. Our guide to plastic cable trunking explains when to choose trunking over a box section.

Spacers, Edging and Custom Fabrication

Because it cuts so easily, plastic box section is a favourite for spacers, packers, edge protection and bespoke fabrication. Makers, joiners and DIYers use it to bridge gaps, build jigs, protect exposed edges and create custom fittings that would be fiddly to make from anything else.

Expert tip: Buy one extra length beyond what you measure. Box section is inexpensive, and having a spare offcut on hand saves a second trip when you mis-cut a mitre or decide to add another support.

Plastic Box Section Sizes and Colours Explained

Choosing the right size is the part most people get stuck on. Our plastic box section comes in two practical sizes that cover the majority of projects:

  • 25 x 25 x 1.2 mm — a compact tube for small frames, spacers, cable runs and fine work.
  • 50 x 50 x 1.6 mm — a larger, stiffer tube for bigger frames, guards and jobs that need more rigidity.

Both sizes are available in 1 metre and 2.5 metre lengths, and in white or black to suit the finish you are working with.

Which Size Do You Need?

As a rule, use the 25mm tube for light, neat work where the profile should stay discreet, and the 50mm tube where you need more strength or a more substantial look. The wall thickness rises with the size (1.2mm on the 25mm, 1.6mm on the 50mm), so the larger profile resists flexing better.

If your project calls for a 40mm or 100mm square tube, those sizes sit outside our box section range. For larger or heavier-duty needs it is usually better to step up to a metal profile, since very large plastic tubes flex too much for serious framing.

Expert tip: When matching to white uPVC windows or trims, the white box section blends in cleanly. For modern interiors, black reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a patch-up, which is why it is the more popular colour for visible work.

PVC vs Aluminium Box Section: Which Should You Choose?

This is the most common comparison people make, and the honest answer is that they suit different jobs.

A plastic (PVC) box section is lightweight, corrosion-free, non-conductive, easy to cut with hand tools and noticeably cheaper. It is the right choice for covers, light frames, cable protection, spacers and anything exposed to damp.

An aluminium box section is stiffer and stronger, so it is the better pick for load-bearing frames, longer unsupported spans and heavy-duty structural work. The trade-off is a higher price and the need for proper cutting tools.

For most DIY and light trade jobs, the plastic option does everything you need at a fraction of the cost. Reserve aluminium for genuine structural loads.

How to Cut and Fit Plastic Box Section

One of the best things about a plastic box section is how easy it is to work with. You do not need specialist tools, and most people can fit it confidently on the first try.

How to cut and use PVC box section square tube

Cutting It Cleanly

  1. Measure and mark your required length, using a try square so the line wraps cleanly around the tube.
  2. Cut with a fine-tooth hacksaw. A finer blade gives a smoother edge and reduces tear-out on the corners.
  3. Deburr the cut edges with a file or fine sandpaper so the join sits flush and looks neat.

Fixing It in Place

  1. Dry-fit the piece first to check the length and angle before you commit.
  2. Fix using a suitable adhesive for a clean, fastener-free finish, or use mechanical fasteners (screws) where you need a stronger, removable hold.
  3. Wipe the surface clean before bonding, as PVC bonds best to a dry, dust-free surface.

Not sure whether to glue or screw? Our guide to adhesives versus mechanical fixings walks through when each method is the right call.

Using Plastic Box Section Indoors and Outdoors

Because it is made from external-grade rigid PVC, a plastic box section copes well with damp, UV exposure and temperature changes. It will not corrode, and it keeps its colour and shape over time with nothing more than an occasional wipe.

That makes it a sensible choice for garden frames, outbuildings, garages and sheltered outdoor projects, as well as kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and workshops indoors. For exposed structural outdoor work that must carry weight, step up to a metal profile instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is plastic box section?

Plastic box section is a hollow square or rectangular tube made from rigid PVC. It is strong for its weight, weatherproof and easy to cut, which makes it popular for framing, cable protection, spacers and general fabrication.

Is plastic box section the same as PVC or uPVC box section?

Yes. "Plastic box section", "PVC box section" and "uPVC box section" all describe the same rigid plastic profile. uPVC simply means unplasticised PVC, the same hard-wearing material used in window frames.

Is plastic box section the same as a square tube?

Yes. A plastic square tube and a plastic box section are the same thing. The name varies by supplier, but both refer to a hollow plastic profile with a square or rectangular cross-section.

What sizes does plastic box section come in?

Our plastic box section is available in 25 x 25 x 1.2 mm and 50 x 50 x 1.6 mm, each in 1 metre and 2.5 metre lengths. Both sizes come in white and black.

What colours are available?

White and black. White blends with uPVC windows and trims, while black is the popular choice for modern interiors and visible work.

Can plastic box section be used outdoors?

Yes. It is made from external-grade rigid PVC that resists moisture, UV and corrosion, so it suits sheltered outdoor projects as well as indoor use. It is not intended for load-bearing outdoor structures.

How do you cut plastic box section?

Mark your length, cut with a fine-tooth hacksaw, then deburr the edges with a file or fine sandpaper for a neat finish. No specialist tools are needed.

Is plastic box section as strong as aluminium box section?

No. Aluminium is stiffer and stronger and is better for load-bearing frames. Plastic box section is lighter, corrosion-free, cheaper and ideal for covers, light frames, cable protection and damp areas.

How do you fix plastic box section in place?

Use a suitable adhesive for a clean, fastener-free finish, or mechanical fasteners such as screws where you need a stronger or removable hold. Bond to a clean, dry surface for best results.

Can I get a 40mm or 100mm plastic square tube?

Our box section range covers 25mm and 50mm sizes. For larger square tubes or heavier-duty framing, a metal profile is usually the better choice, as very large plastic tubes flex too much for structural work.
