Skirting-to-wall and skirting-to-ceiling joints

12mm quadrant beading
The best all-round size for most domestic flooring projects. 12mm covers standard laminate expansion gaps cleanly, sits proportionately against modern skirting heights (usually 100 to 150mm), and gives a clean finish without drawing attention to itself. The smallest of the three, and the most discreet. Best for delicate finishing work: covering thin expansion gaps on hardwood flooring, tidying the top edge of skirting against a wavy wall, or fitting inside cabinets where a chunkier profile would look out of place. Quadrant vs Scotia vs Flat Beading: Which Profile to Use
Quadrant is not the only small profile in the finishing aisle. Scotia and flat beading each solve slightly different problems.
Quadrant has a symmetrical quarter-circle. Both flat faces are the same width. Best for standard right-angled joints where the two surfaces meet at 90 degrees. Neutral, unfussy, works almost anywhere.
Scotia has a concave face rather than a convex one. The outer profile curves inwards, giving a more decorative shadow line. How to Cut Wooden Quadrant Beading
Wooden quadrant beading cuts easily with hand tools. You do not need power kit for a single room, though a mitre saw speeds things up on larger jobs.
Straight cuts
Mark the length with a sharp pencil, place the beading in a mitre box (or on the fence of a mitre saw), and cut with a fine-tooth handsaw or a 60-tooth mitre saw blade. Support both sides of the cut so the beading does not tear at the end of the stroke.
Internal corners (mitre method)
Set the saw to 45 degrees. Cut the first piece with the saw angled one way, the second with the saw angled the other way. When both pieces are pushed into the corner, the mitre cuts meet at 90 degrees.
Test-fit first. Not every wall corner is exactly 90 degrees, particularly in older properties. If there is a gap, adjust the angle in 1 degree steps until the mitre closes.
External corners
Same principle: 45 degree cuts with the long edges facing outwards. External mitres are more visible than internal ones, so accuracy matters. A digital angle finder is worth its small cost.
Expert tip: on internal corners with wavy walls, scribing gives a tighter fit than a mitre. Cut the first piece square into the corner, then use a coping saw to shape the second piece so it follows the profile of the first. It looks the same from any normal viewing distance and hides wall imperfections.
How to Fit Wooden Quadrant Beading
Three fixing methods work, and the right choice depends on what the beading is being fitted to.
Grab adhesive is the fastest and least visible fix. Apply a thin zig-zag bead along the two flat faces of the quadrant, press it into the corner and hold for 30 seconds. No holes, no filler, no visible fixings. Works well on painted skirting, laminate flooring and any solid surface. This is the standard modern approach.
Panel pins give a stronger hold on rougher surfaces or heavier beading. Use 20 to 25mm oval brads or panel pins. Set the head just below the surface with a punch, then fill and sand before staining or painting. Slower but very reliable.
Combination fixing uses adhesive as the primary bond and a couple of pins to hold the beading in place while the glue sets. Useful on very long runs, on beading that will take some knocks (near doorways), or on old skirting where the paint surface is not perfectly clean.

Finishing: Sanding, Staining and Painting

- Sand the beading lightly with 180 grit paper before finishing. This opens the grain and lets stain or paint bond properly.
- If you are staining, apply a coat of pine sanding sealer first. Pine absorbs stain unevenly (the softer grain sucks it up, the harder grain resists) and a sealer evens this out.
- Apply stain or paint before fitting where possible. It is much faster to finish a straight length on a bench than a fitted piece against a wall.
- For painted white finishes, a quick primer coat followed by two thin topcoats of white eggshell or satin gives the cleanest result.
