When to use 6mm glass runners

6mm runners are designed for larger enclosures — 4ft wide and above — where the extra glass thickness provides the rigidity needed for heavier panels. A large sliding glass panel in 4mm glass will flex noticeably when you push it, which puts stress on the track over time.

For adult bearded dragon vivariums (4ft), large monitor enclosures or custom display cabinets, 6mm glass and 6mm runners are the safer option.

What lengths are available?

How to install glass runners in a vivarium — step by step

Installing vivarium glass runners is a straightforward DIY job. You'll need a tape measure, pencil, fine-tooth saw, PVC adhesive or screws, and a spirit level.

Step 1 — Measure the opening accurately

Measure the internal width of the vivarium opening at both the top and bottom. If the measurements differ by more than 1–2mm, check that the enclosure is square before proceeding. Also measure the height of the opening — you'll use this to calculate your glass panel dimensions later.

Step 2 — Cut the runners to length

Cut both tracks to the exact internal width of the opening. Use a fine-tooth saw (a junior hacksaw or mitre saw works well) and cut cleanly and squarely. Deburr the cut ends lightly with sandpaper if needed.

Step 3 — Fix the bottom runner

Apply a bead of PVC-compatible adhesive along the base of the channel, or pre-drill and screw through the base of the profile into the vivarium floor. Press firmly into position along the front edge of the opening. Check it's straight with a spirit level and wipe away any excess adhesive immediately.

Step 4 — Fix the top runner

The top runner goes directly above, aligned vertically with the bottom track. Fixing method is the same — adhesive or screws. The top channel is deeper, so take care to orient it correctly (open side facing down).

Step 5 — Calculate and order your glass panels

Glass panel height = opening height minus the combined depth of both channels, plus the overlap into each track. A typical calculation: if your opening is 400mm tall, top channel depth is 12mm, bottom channel depth is 6mm — your glass height should be approximately 400mm minus 12mm minus 6mm plus the engagement allowance (usually 3–4mm into each track). For width: if you're fitting two overlapping panels (standard for most vivariums), each panel width should be slightly over half the opening width — usually the internal width divided by 2, plus 25–30mm overlap. This ensures the panels always cover the opening even when one is slid fully open.

Step 6 — Insert the glass panels

Hold the glass panel at a slight angle, insert the top edge up into the deeper top channel first, then lower the bottom edge into the bottom channel. Slide the panel along the track to check movement. Repeat for the second panel, fitting it in front of or behind the first depending on your preferred opening direction.

Step 7 — Test and adjust

Slide both panels fully open and fully closed several times. Movement should be smooth with no binding. If a panel catches, check the track alignment and that no adhesive has squeezed into the channel interior.

Common problems and how to fix them

Glass doors sticking or dragging

The most common cause is debris in the bottom channel — dust, substrate or shed skin builds up over time and creates resistance. Clean the track with a dry brush or compressed air. If the panel still sticks, check the bottom track is level — even a 1–2mm slope across the width will cause drag.

Glass panels rattling or vibrating

Rattling usually means the glass is slightly undersized for the channel — there's too much play in the track. This can happen if glass dimensions were calculated incorrectly or if the enclosure has flexed slightly over time. A strip of self-adhesive foam tape inside the channel will take up the slack and eliminate rattle without affecting movement.

Glass panels falling out

Tracks coming loose
